Different meanings of Fuck

PART 1 / 5

Welcome to Proofessors school of English slang. This podcast  is part 1 of 5.

This podcast is strictly for over 18’s only, so if you are not 18 or over please turn it off now.

More and more people these days are using swear words instead of normal words. So although you can choose not to use swear words it is important to know what they mean. For example, “I feel tired”. Now so many people will remove the word tired and say “I feel fucked”.   Another example  is “I made a mistake”, but instead of saying mistake people will say “I fucked up”.

So today, I am going to teach you some sentences using the word Fuck where the meaning may not be clear to non – native speakers.

Lets start with the example from the introduction.  “I feel tired”. A lot of people will say to their friends “I feel fucked”. Its common to hear people saying this after they finish working. You can also be more specific and say what made you feel tired. For example if you were working hard, you can say “I feel fucked from work” or “I feel fucked after working all day”.

The next phrase is “I am fucked”. This is totally different to “I feel fucked”. If you say “I am fucked” then this usually means that you are in trouble.  So if you made a mistake at work you may tell your friend “I am so fucked”. This is the same as saying you are in big trouble. There are so many examples where you could use this. If Barcelona are beating Man Utd 3 -0, you can say Man Utd are fucked. Meaning Man utd are in trouble.  If you are driving and your car breaks down then you can say “I am fucked”.

However, if you say an object is fucked it means that it is broken or not working properly. For example “The computer is fucked”. This means the computer is broken or not working properly.  Another example “don’t sit on that chair, it is fucked”. You can add a word to indicate if something is 100% broken or beyond repair. For example “The computer is completely fucked”. Or “the computer is totally fucked”. This would mean that it is so broken, that it probably doesn’t even turn on.

This is where it can get confusing. If I say “I am fucked up” this can mean that I am drunk or just that something is wrong with me. For example, if someone is often very strange or weird, you can say to your friend “He is fucked up”. However, fucked up is also used for alcohol. So if you go to a bar with your friends and someone says “lets get fucked up”. This means let’s all get drunk.   So if you got drunk last night and your friend asks “How was last night”, you may reply “I got fucked up”, or if you was with a group of people “we all got fucked up”. That means everybody got drunk.

I hope this helps you. If you found this useful or interesting please feel free to check out part 2 which is on our website www.proofessor.co.uk.
